How to use

What this tool is for
On a bad line, “B” and “D” sound alike. The NATO/ICAO radiotelephony alphabet maps each letter to a standard code word (Alfa, Bravo, Charlie…) and each digit to a spoken form (Zero–Nine). This page turns your paste into those words so you can read an email local-part, a booking code, or a serial number clearly. It is a voice aid, not encryption and not a radio transmitter.
How it works
The input is lowercased and split on whitespace into tokens. Each character inside a token is mapped through the ICAO table: a→Alfa … z→Zulu, 0→Zero … 9→Nine. Characters outside that map (punctuation, symbols) pass through unchanged. Letters inside one word are joined with spaces; separate input words become separate output lines. Example: `Hi 42` becomes two lines — `Hotel India` and `Four Two`.
When to use it
Confirming email addresses over the phone, reading serial numbers, aviation and amateur-radio practice, support calls where consonants blur, and any verbal check where you would otherwise invent “B as in boy.”
When not to use it
Do not use it as encryption. Do not assume every call center uses NATO — some still use local mnemonics. Do not spell passwords out loud in public spaces. Prefer the Phonetic Spelling Tool when you only need letter-name sounds (aitch-eye) without code words.
How it compares to related tools

Common mistakes
Writing “Alpha” when ICAO standardized “Alfa.” Mixing civilian “S as in Sam” halfway through a serial. Reading punctuation as if it had a code word when the tool simply echoed the symbol. Spelling a password on a crowded train.
Alfa, Juliett, and other spellings
ICAO chose Alfa and Juliett to reduce mishearing across languages. This translator follows those spellings. If your organization still trains “Alpha,” say so explicitly on the call — the written output here will still show Alfa. Digits are individual words (Four Two), not “forty-two,” which matches how identifiers are usually read on the radio.
Whitespace and multiple tokens
Spaces in the input become line breaks in the output so you can pause between words. That is intentional for call pacing. If you need one continuous stream, join the lines when you speak, or paste without spaces. Empty input yields empty output.
